with an october surprise? let's welcome stephanie cutter. it's going reasonably well for you guys. it's been a good couple weeks, really since the conventions. you've got a bit of momentum but i guess you're not taking this too complacently. >> no, absolutely not, piers. you know, debates can be a pivotal moment in campaigns. i remember eight years ago when john kerry was getting ready to debate george bush, we were eight points down. coming out of that first debate we were tied with george bush. so there is an opportunity for mitt romney if he takes advantage of it next wednesday night, to turn the momentum around. he not only has to win this debate but has to change the dynamics in this race. we know he's going to show up prepared, disciplined and aggressive, even tim pawlenty said that he's as good as it gets when it comes to debating. but the question is whether or not he's going to be able to talk to the american people specifically about what his plans are for this country. that's been a huge deficit for him over the course of this campaign. no specifics, no details. so i think that is

, stephanie cutter. good to see you, stephanie. the crowd behind jim acosta is fired up. the focus group i was with last night is very clear. i mentioned this to jim. in case you didn't hear me, those personal attributes, likability, strength, mitt romney really surged. it's just two men in this case on that stage. what could the president have done to avoid the outcome that end ended up happening? >> well, you know, in terms of mitt romney surging, just remember how much of a deficit he had to make up. i mean, he was in some cases double digits behind the president and all those attributes and the president is still leading on them. we expected an aggressive debater to show up last night on the debate stage with barack obama. we didn't expect an aggressively dishonest debater to show up. that's what we got in mitt romney. what could the president have done differently? of course, we'll recalibrate and recalculate based on the mitt romney that showed up last night. we've got two more debates left. now we know what we're dealing with. we know that mitt romney will, in a split second, waulk

or three to replace that one tonight. thank you very much. see you later. joining me in denver, stephanie cutter, deputy campaign manager for the president's re-election effort. where were you when you heard joe biden yesterday? >> i don't remember. because we don't see this as a tremendous deal. the romney campaign is good at jumping on whatever out of context comment of the day is, what they're not good at is understanding the challenges that middle class face. the fact that they don't believe the middle class bore the biggest brunt of the economic crisis is born out in your poll today. and a number of other polls that mitt romney doesn't understand the challenges that the middle class faces. what joe biden was saying, at which he often says on the campaign trail, is that because of the policies of the last administration and some of the same policies that mitt romney and paul ryan want to go back to, the middle class was severely punished and has take an while to bounce back. but the president has put the middle class at the center of everything that he has done over the past four year
